We celebrated with you that we’ve now reached 50,000 participants!

50,000 thanks, Cantabria!

More than 1,000 people took a moment out of their day last Tuesday, October 28, to attend the celebration after reaching our goal of 50,000 participants. It was an emotional event, where institutions, scientists, and participants all contributed their part.

The event was opened and introduced by Dr. Galo Peralta, Managing Director of IDIVAL. He was followed by Dr. Javier Crespo García, recently appointed Scientific Director of the Cantabria Cohort. Dr. Marcos López Hoyos, as Scientific Director of IDIVAL and former Director of the Cantabria Cohort until now, began the presentations with his talk “4 Years of the Cantabria Cohort,” in which he highlighted the most significant milestones of the study since its inception.

Next, Dr. Trinidad Dierssen Sotos, Associate Professor at the University of Cantabria and Principal Investigator of the UC-IDIVAL Epidemiology and Public Health Group, spoke about her project linked to the Cantabria Cohort, COCIR. In her talk, “Circadian Disruption: When Our Internal Clock Falls Out of Sync,” she gave an engaging explanation of how our biological cycles work and presented the initiative she is currently leading.

Then, Dr. Marta Alonso Peña gave an excellent presentation on the “ANJANA Project,” which she has carried out using samples from the Cantabria Cohort to study ACOX2 Deficiency–Associated Hypertransaminasemia (HADA). This is a rare disease (although, in her words, “not so rare”) that she began researching during her undergraduate studies in Biotechnology at the University of Salamanca.

The final presentation was given by the Cohort Coordinators, Dr. Marta Díaz Martínez and Dr. Ana Peleterio Vigil, who offered a warm and engaging explanation of what the follow-up phase will involve and how scientific collaborations with the Cantabria Cohort will operate.

The Regional Minister of Health, Mr. César Pascual Fernández, delivered an inspiring closing speech addressed to the people of Cantabria who take part in the study. In his words: “Behind every blood sample, behind every questionnaire, behind every piece of data, there is a story, a life, a part of this land,” and “without you, there would be no science, no future, and no reason for us to gather here today, of course.”

Dr. Manuel Galán Cuesta brought the celebration to a close by conducting the choir “We Are Cantabria Cohort”, which performed four well-known songs and invited the audience to sing along.

Once again, thank you, Cantabria. ❤️
