Javier Crespo García, new Scientific Director of Cohorte Cantabria
Dr. Javier Crespo García, one of Spain’s leading specialists in digestive diseases and one of the driving forces behind Cohorte Cantabria, has taken on the role of Scientific Director of the project.
He holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Cantabria and is a professor at its Faculty of Medicine. He has served as Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, and as President of the Spanish Society of Digestive Pathology between 2018 and 2022. As a scientific member of the National Strategic Plan against Hepatitis C, he has led pioneering programs aimed at eliminating this disease, including the project at El Dueso Prison, the first in the world to provide universal treatment to all inmates with this condition.
With extensive experience in managing multicenter and international projects, he founded and led the Clinical and Translational Research Group in Digestive Diseases at the Marqués de Valdecilla Research Institute (IDIVAL).
Since 2021, the scientific leadership of Cohorte Cantabria had been held by Dr. Marcos López Hoyos, Scientific Director of IDIVAL and Head of the Immunology Department at HUMV, who will remain closely involved in the project as a member of the Steering Committee. With this transition, Dr. Javier Crespo will continue to strengthen Cohorte Cantabria as a benchmark in biomedical research.
