¡Objetivo cumplido! - Cohorte Cantabria

We’ve made history

50,000 Cantabrian people have made history. We are all the volunteers who are part of Cantabria Cohort, the largest population-based study in Spain, aimed at improving knowledge about health and advancing toward more personalized and preventive medicine. We are an ambitious and pioneering initiative in our country, with more than four years of progress, and we now conclude our first recruitment phase with resounding success, thanks to the support of the entire Cantabrian society.

Over the years, many institutions have shown interest in our project — both from Cantabria (such as the Public Health Observatory, the University of Cantabria, and researchers from the Valdecilla environment) and from across the country. Among the latter are prestigious centers such as CICbioGUNE (Biscay), the Research Center for Neurological Diseases (Madrid), and the Center for Genomic Regulation (Barcelona). Scientists from these institutions have proposed research projects based on our samples and data.

The material provided by the Cantabria Cohort participants is already driving studies on conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, breast cancer, fatty liver disease, and even rare diseases. The richness of our data and resources also serves as a foundation for other regional projects such as “Cantabria en forma,” an initiative aimed at preventing obesity and overweight in the child population of our community.

Part of the key to this collective success is having staff fully dedicated to developing the initiative, employed by the Marqués de Valdecilla Research Institute (IDIVAL) and the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (HUMV). Thanks to their solid training and extensive experience, our professionals ensure the highest quality in every study protocol, maintaining excellence as a daily standard.

To commemorate the milestone of reaching 50,000 volunteers, Cohorte Cantabria will hold a celebration event next Tuesday, October 28, at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria. This event will bring together volunteers, collaborators, researchers, and authorities, and will serve as a tribute to the public participation that has made the growth and consolidation of the project possible over more than four years.

During the event, authorities from the Government of Cantabria will speak, along with our scientific director, Dr. Marcos López Hoyos, who will review the history and achievements of Cohorte Cantabria since its creation. Cantabrian researchers Dr. Trinidad Dierssen Soto and Dr. Marta Alonso Peña will also take part, presenting the scientific studies they are conducting using our samples and data. The session will conclude with contributions from our coordinators, Dr. Marta Díaz Martínez and Dr. Ana Peleteiro Vigil, who will share the project’s next steps. The event will be hosted by IDIVAL’s managing director, Galo Peralta, and we will close the day with a brief choral performance conducted by Manuel Galán, providing a musical finale to a celebration dedicated to science and civic participation.
