This makes it possible for them to be used in research projects aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of numerous diseases.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the initiatives developed by the Valdecilla Biobank is the <strong>Brain Donation Programme<\/strong>, which offers members of the public the opportunity to make an altruistic contribution to research after their death. <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Why is studying the brain so important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The brain remains one of the most complex and least understood organs in the human body. Studying it is particularly important for gaining a better understanding of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and other forms of dementia. The impact of these conditions on health and society is increasing, among other factors, as a result of the progressive ageing of the population.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To advance our understanding of these diseases, it is not enough to observe their clinical manifestations alone. Direct study of human brain tissue allows researchers to analyse the cellular and molecular changes associated with disease, gain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in its onset and progression, and identify potential biomarkers and new approaches to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For this reason, the availability of high-quality brain tissue samples is an extremely valuable resource for research. Every donation can help generate knowledge that may contribute to a better understanding of these diseases in the future and to the development of new tools to combat them.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Who can become a brain donor?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anyone over the age of 18 can express their wish to become a donor by signing the corresponding Informed Consent Form.
